Issues
Small Government can make a big difference.
Effective actions to fix the economy and state government:
-Reduce taxes across the board, and prevent the Democrats from making the 2009 “temporary” tax increase permanent.
-Reduce spending by indexing growth to inflation plus population growth and utilize zero based budgeting.
-Reduce and eliminate unnecessary regulations that strangle our businesses.
My top priority as your State Senator will be to focus on jobs and the economy.
- During the past 8 years of Democrats control of all branches of North Carolina state government – including the State Senate – they have increased state spending by a staggering 40 percent!
- A modest, but effective, spending control that I support – indexing spending increases to inflation and population growth – will quickly produce significantly lower spending in the coming years.
- The Democrats’ ever-growing appetite for increased spending has led to escalating taxes on North Carolina families and businesses. The Democrats have passed billion dollar tax increases in 6 of the past 8 years. Because of the tax increases, North Carolina now has the highest taxes in the Southeast. Take for instance the 30 cents that is added to every gallon of gas you buy; we could easily come in alignment with neighboring states and immediately cut 10 cents from every gallon you purchase at the pump.
- North Carolina’s high taxes make it harder for businesses to grow, create jobs, and compete in the global marketplace. Our noncompetitive tax rates make North Carolina a less attractive place to start new businesses or relocate existing ones. This is a major reason North Carolina’s economy continues to struggle. All of this has added up to the tragic result of North Carolina having one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.
As the father of three beautiful children; I know that improving our state is essential to their future. Taking care of our towns, counties and state requires that North Carolina focuses on becoming fiscally sound; this will lead to a different approach than we see in Raleigh right now. No more talking about improving the economy, we need action now to restrain our spending and reduce taxes. Instead, we need a Republican led state Senate majority with firm belief in small government, dedicated to establishing a positive environment for job creation. Jobs we need now and for our children when they are ready.
